Hook & Son Dairy January 2021 Newsletter

January seems to have flown by! It has been a wet month, with some of our marshland being flooded (pictured). We still have some young beef animals out, which we are now supplementary feeding with the baled rushes that we made back in August when the sun was hot! The fields with rushes had some grass as well which has made some lovely hay; the beef youngsters are quite happy to pick through these bales finding the lovely bits of grassy hay in amongst the rushes!
As I mentioned last month, our fields have been grazed by a local farmer’s sheep over the winter and these are moved off the farm by the first week in February. As soon as the fields dry up enough to drive on with a tractor, hopefully by the end of February, we will put a light coat of composted manure on the fields and roll and grass harrow them. Hopefully by the middle of April there will be a lovely new lush growth of nutritious spring grass for our cows to graze!

We have had some team members self-isolate and return to work after 10 days self-isolation, although no-one has been ill. However, when this has happened it has meant fellow staff have had to pitch in to cover shifts, so that we can continue to produce, bottle, and deliver milk, cream, butter, yogurt, and ghee for our customers.
Whatever happens, the cows have no idea what is going on in our human world at present and still need to be milked twice a day! We have organised our staff into ‘work bubbles’ of farm staff, two production teams, office staff, milk round delivery staff, and farmers market staff, to try and keep everybody safe, and to protect our business and keep it running.

Our dairy beef is becoming very popular! More customers on the milk rounds are having beef joints, choice cuts, sausages and mince delivered along with their dairy produce.
If you would like to make sure you get your favourite cuts of our beef, especially for Valentine‚Äôs Day on 14 February, please contact the office on 01323 449494 or email [email protected] we will be happy to help you.
